Song: "potato girl"

The song "potato girl" has always reminded me of a painting called "The Horse-Shoe Path." It's a really beautiful depiction of a French girl streaming out of her cottage and down a horse-shoe path into a thicket of forest. Personally, the song makes me think of stepping through a door and just being sucked into a grey void. And the longer your in the void the more you wish for someone to guide you or give a little hope because of an increasing paranoia that something is always chasing you. This is the same impression that I get from the painting. The door to the girl's cottage is closed, so there's no possibility of turning back. The girl is traveling further and further from her house, which is bathed in sunlight and polka dotted with brilliant flowers, and getting closer to this dark, oppressing forest. To put it simply, the forest is dead. It's just this big, lifeless vacuum that eats the world alive. I swear that you can see a really faint outline of a man in the back of the woods. It doesn't seem like anything would be able to escape the forest, but at the very top of the painting there is a bird soaring out of the thicket. To me, the bird has always represented the optimism that Raine is asking for in the song. The hope that something will be able to escape the void, escape the man, and get back to the cottage.

Song: Lying Awake

"Lying Awake" is my favorite song. Our Lady Peace has been my favorite band since I first heard "Superman's Dead," but "Lying Awake" is the song that means the most to me. When "Happiness..." was released, I was in the middle of a serious pit of depression. I spent many nights lying in bed sobbing, unsure why I was so sad. The release of "Happiness..." and especially the song "Lying Awake" was a turning point for me, and I realized that happiness is not something you go looking for; it's not a fish that you can catch. Looking for it only serves to remind you that you're still sad. I felt like "Happiness..." was a personal gift to me from Our Lady Peace. They were telling me that the way to achieve happiness is to wait for it, let it surround you, and make it a part of yourself. Even now, I still find myself lying awake some nights, but thanks to Our Lady Peace I know that things aren't so bad, and good things will find their way to me if I'll only let them.

Song: Life

I cannot tell you how much the song 'Life' has meant to me... I was in one of the lowest points in my life, but it never fails once I hear an olp song my eyes lighten and life doesn't seem so bad. 'Life' made me realize that no matter how messed up life really is it will get better and you'll survive the hard times. I cannot tell you how many times I've been pushed around, how many times my friends have let me down, or even how many times I wished I was strong... but after hearing 'Life' things seemed so much better. I love this song, and every other song olp has ever made. Its like a release from everyday chaos listening to them.
