June 3rd Kerrang MagazineHot
- Bands you must hearThis
is a section in Kerrang! that tries to tell you first about the new hot bands coming to play here in the UK. This is obviously an article to promote the show on June 9th.
Apart from Alanis Morissette, Canada isn't exactly renowned for producing million-selling rock artists. Not until Ontario quartet Our Lady Peace came onto the scene.
With total sales of debut album 'Naveed' and last year's follow-up 'Clumsy' now reaching over two million in the US alone, and several sold-out tours under their belts, frontman Raine Maida is entitled to sound please with himself.
"We just want to make records you have to listen to all the way through," Maida admits. "Thats our whole perception of music. We're not concerned with making hit singles."
With a line-up completed by guitarist Mike Turner, bassit Duncan Coutts and drummer Jeremy Taggart, the band's sound comes from diverse influences; early REM and U2, Jeff Buckley, Tool and Sinead O'Connor are Raine's preffered listening, though OLP are most often called 'post-grunge'.
"But I can't really do all that low, miserable stuff," Maida laughs. "My voice is just too high for that!"
Our Lady Peace play London Borderline on June 9th.
