After a 45 minute drive from Cincinnati to Dayton, Molly and I finally reached the Dayton Hara Arena. Our first encounter was with a secruity guard
yelling at us. She told us to get in line behind the others so they could
check us out. I had brought an orange poster (which said EVE6 ROCKS!) and a
lime poster (which said WE LOVE OUR LADY PEACE!), my CDs, and a camera with
some film. Secruity was tight- absolutely no cameras. Luckily, I was smart
enough to stuff my camera and film into a sock at the bottom of my bookbag.
In other words, they didn't find it =D.
We entered the arena (which wasn't big at all!) and sat down on the floor.
We then left to go to the restroom. On the way there, we stopped by the
merchandise stand. There were many Third Eye Blind shirts and stickers. For
Eve6, there was only tshirts. I already had two of the Our Lady Peace shirts
they had for sale. I didn't really want the baby tee they had. So instead, I
got two OLP stickers and a beanie. They also had some Pied Piper's Union
(Yay! PPU!) cards at the front as an advertisement. I took about four of
those, too.
SETLIST: Automatic Flowers/Superman's Dead/Naveed/Car Crash/Let You Down
4a.m./Clumsy/Starseed/Eternal Life
We went back to the floor and got our spot again. I was waiting anxiously.
I had brought a envelope with two notes and a picture to give to Our Lady
Peace. I went up to one of the secruity guards by the stage and asked him if
I could give it to the band or have someone give it for me. He told me to ask
the supervisor. I asked him and he told me to look for him after Our Lady
Peace leaves the stage. I sat back down till we were told the concert was
about to start. We moved to the front of stage. Just then, the lights died
down and Eve6 began to play. They opened with "How Much Longer." I held up my
sign and sure enough, they saw it. In fact, both Max and Jon said into their
mike something like "Hey, I like your sign. Very cool. Nice people out
there." Everyone just kind of turned around and smiled at me. I felt weird.
As time went on, people began to get more into the music; the crowd surfing
and some moshing began. Tony stood up a few times to get the crowd wild. I
took a few pictures and the secruity guard caught me, but I still kept taking
them! Eve6 ended their set with "Superhero Girl." The other songs they
played were "Inside Out," "Leech," "Showerhead," "Open Road Song," "Tongue
Tied," and "Small Town Trap." I know from that concert they scored some new
fans.
Once Eve6 left the stage, the Our Lady Peace roadies (more familiar than
ever) came on and started to set up. I was looking for Roger (hehe Jenny!),
and I had spotted him. At the count of three, Four girls, one guy, and I all
yelled "ROGER!" really loud. He turned around, I smiled and waved, and he did
the same back saying "Hi!" I had the envelope in my hand. I asked the same
secruity guard to please give it to the roadie on stage. He willingly did! I
thanked him a billion times! Just then, we saw Jeremy behind the stage...
Finally, the lights went out again. I saw the shadows of Raine, Mike,
Jeremy, and Duncan come out from behind the stage. The crowd cheered (the
girl standing next to me was all "Raine! I can't believe this! He's my
god!") as "Automatic Flowers" began. Right then and there, the crowd surfing
had begun. The secruity guards were taking them out from all directions.
Mike just kind of shook his head and smiled. I held up my Our Lady Peace
sign, and got it taken away! So I wrote on the back on my Eve6 sign, and got
that taken away too. Don't ask me why! I then got my camera out and started
to take some more pictures. Our Lady Peace played (in this order):
"Automatic Flowers," "Superman's Dead," "Naveed," "Let You Down," "Car Crash,"
"4 AM," "Clumsy," "Starseed," and a Jeff Buckley cover (I forget which one).
If you think Raine has an incredible vocal range, wait till you hear him sing
that cover! I remember during "Naveed" when I was singing along, Mike looked
at me and gave me this huge smiled, and I gave him a big grin back. That made
my night! They definately got some more fans from their gig, too! Our Lady
Peace was amazing as usual! Just as brillant as the first and second times I
had seen them.
Our next mission was to meet the band. I went over to the side of the stage and asked if there was anyway to get backstage. The secruity guard said that I couldn't without a pass. But one of the roadies came by when I showed him
my Pied Piper's Union card and said he would try to see what he could do.
Just then I saw Roger walk by me, and I said "Hey Roger! Is there anyway we
can go back to meet the band?" And he said that he couldn't but would cos
this wasn't an Our Lady Peace concert, it was a Third Eye Blind one and no one
can go behind the stage (which was true). But he was really nice about it.
(Jenny: I asked him if he remembered you, and he said that he did!).
Then Molly and I went around to the side of the arena to another backstage
entrance. We asked the secruity guard (who was full of himself cos he met so
many bands and knew we wanted to) if we could get
backstage and he said "Not without a pass." We talked with him for awhile and
sat down on the floor. I got "Naveed" and "Clumsy" out just incase I spotted
someone. And sure enough, about 10 minutes later, MIKE WALKS FROM BEHIND THE
SECRUITY GUARD! I just kind of sat there and said "Mike?!" He turned around,
smiled, and said "hi!" I told him "Hi!" and "Can I shake your hand?" and said
some stuff in between. I said, "I see you got your hair all cut off- its
brown now, too." And he said that they had three weeks off before this tour,
and he basically just shaved it all off. He gave these funny guestures and
was laughing while he said that. I told him about Automatic Flowers (and
asked if he remembered Jenny but he couldn't recall at the moment) and I asked
him if he got a blue envelope the secruity guard gave to the roadie. He asked
which roadie and I said "The one with Duncan's bass." He said something like
Yea that's so and so- it'll get to us. And I said "I hope you do get it."
Mike then said like I hope so too. I then told him about me meeting Roger and
how he was really nice and he was like "Yea, Roger's a sweet heart." He then
signed the cover of "Naveed" and got a few pictures with him. I didn't want
to keep him waiting (he was on his way to see Third Eye Blind play a bit) so I
said "It was really nice meeting you." He said "Nice meeting you too. What's
your name again?" I said "Reena." Then we said good bye and I shook his hand
again. I was surprisingly not nervous at all. He was such a sweety.
Molly and I waited longer to see if any of the other guys would come out.
Some girls who won a contest to dance on stage with Third Eye Blind came over
to talk to us. We said we just met Mike and they were asking us about it.
Ten minutes later, Mike walks toward back backstage and I said "Hey Mike!
Good show?" and he said hi and something else (I forget!). Two OLP fans we
were talking to said "Who were you just speaking to?" And I said "That was
just Mike Turner behind you!" and they were in shock! We talked to them for
awhile & checked out 3EB for a few minutes when the roadie who said "I'll see
what I can do" from before came out. I asked about what he said and he told
me that he couldn't find me earlier and to stay where I was & he didn't forget
about me.
While we waited, Eve6 was upstairs behind a glass window. Tony was waving to
us and we started to jump up and down and so did he. Then Max and Jon came
and waved to us. They then opened the window and tried to say something but I
couldn't hear them. It was really cool!
We had been waiting for 30 minutes and the roadie didn't seem to be coming
back. So, Molly and I went back to the merchandise stand so I could buy an
Eve6 shirt. The concert had ended so we decided to try and beat the traffic.
While we were walking out, I thought that we should find the tour busses. We
drove around to the back of the arena and found them. There were other people
there waiting too. I saw Our Lady Peace's tour bus and took a few pictures of
it. There was a TV going inside with baseball on it. Little did I know that
Raine, Mike, Jeremy, and Duncan were inside! How did I know? Cos the bus
began to leave! Disappointed, (but still thrilled I got to meet Mike) I
hopped back in the car and we left the arena. I didn't get to meet the rest
of Our Lady Peace. But the cool part was is that while we were ready to take
our exit to the other interstate, we spotted their tourbus and I got a chance
to take a picture of it! That was pretty hip!
Besides almost getting in a car accident with a semi, it was one of THE BEST
NIGHTS OF MY LIFE! I've said it a million times and I'll say it again: If
you haven't seen Our Lady Peace in concert and have the chance, take it! You
won't be disappointed!
