The day was dreary to begin with and OLP took the stage in the early afternoon to soundcheck for their big performance which would open the show. Now the stage was located in the parking lot which was fenced in. Rabid OLP fans surrounded the chain-link fence to watch the band soundcheck. The opening chords of '4am' were strummed and the band played a slightly sped up version of the song. The band then went through a few mic checks and such and after a little noodling on the guitars and drums the band exploded into a blistering version of One Man Army that was recorded by Much reporters and aired later in the day.
What you didn't hear on RapidFax was the the OLP fans were so rabid that when Britney Spears took the stage to soundcheck they were still chanting 'Our Lady Peace'! Miss Spears shrugged it off and soundchecked with her new single 'Crazy'. Near the end of the song while the crowd still chanted OLP she was struck by a flying bottle which hit her in the shoulder. Britney was none too pleased and left the stage.
On to the red carpet, the boys made their entrance just after 7 pm EST and they signed autographs and took pictures with fans for about 15-20 minutes. Mike made an uncharacteristic quick entrance while Jeremy and Duncan spent a while outside. Raine made his entrance in a black deftones shirt and also hung out with the fans. Jeremy wore a baby blue '7' jersey which only begs the question "How many of those damn shirts does he have anyway!?"
The band made its entrance to the stage just before '8' while the VJ's were warming up the crowd. The atmosphere was electric and the band launched into an epic version of 'One Man Army' which featured smooth video cuts and dolly's and made the performance look every bit like the million dollar production it was!
Well after that I tuned out, I didn't feel much like watching 'Len' take a bunch of awards and I certainly didn't want to watch Britney or 98 degrees perform. Apart from OLP and the Red Hot Chili Peppers it seemed like this was an awards show built for 13 year olds.
But OLP pulled it off on national television, providing an electric opening to this year's MMVA's. We'll
be hearing from people in Carolina next! I can't wait!
