MTV: Welcome to the MTV Arena for this chat with Our Lady Peace! Canadian rockers Our Lady Peace debuted at #1 on the Canadian SoundScan chart with their recently-released second album, Clumsy, and are currently going strong stateside with their awfully catchy first single, "Superman's Dead." Clumsy is the follow-up to their successful debut record, Naveed.
MTV: When touring in support of Naveed, Our Lady Peace, who has only been together since 1993, received a personal invitation from fellow Canadian Alanis Morissette to open up for her. Those Canadians really stick together, eh?
MTV: During the chat, *There Will Be a CONTEST*
How to participate in the contest:
-The first 15 people who have their question asked during the live Chat will each win an autographed "Our Lady Piece Pack," containing an autographed "Clumsy" CD, poster and O.L.P. sticker. Tonight, Jeremy Taggart and Duncan Coutts are here! Welcome guys! How's it goin'?
Duncan: Alright...
MTV: The first 15 questions which are asked during the chat will receive prizes....party on! Here come those questions now...
Jeremy:Fabulous
MTV: STP1fann asks: From your recent success on Clumsy, are you working in the Studio at all?
Duncan: We'll be going in for a couple of days next month.
Jeremy: A little bit. Just demoing ideas.
MTVRock: [email protected] asks: I wanted to know why Clumsy is so much different than Naveed? And you said that you thought that Clumsy was a step higher than Naveed? How do you think that? For me personally, I love Naveed. I think it is pretty much close to perfect through my eyes. I just wanted to know why they were so different. The music, and the lyrics, and all of you have done a lot of changing in the last 2 years while you were writing Clumsy.
Jeremy: The main reason it's different is that we toured for 2 years between the 2 records, and before Naveed we had only done 6 shows. We matured a lot after touring.
Duncan: Aside from just lots of touring and experimenting with different sounds, we were.. different people going into Clumsy.
Jeremy: The touring effected the song writing.
Duncan: And I'm a different bass player than the original guy.. And that is inevitably going to affect the relationship of band members within the group.
MTVOnstage: Raine6900 asks: whole group: why did you choose the dummy through out the learic booklet? any symbolizem?
Duncan: It was really a friend of ours that took the pictures and sent them to us, and we just.. thought it sort of represented the darker and deeper side of the lyrics that have.. evolved in the lyrics.
Jeremy: It was also a common thread that brought some of the feelings that we had collectively.. between the two records
MTVRock: [email protected] asks: DEAR OUR LADY PEACE, BECAUSE I AM A CANADIAN (from St. John's, Newfoundland) i was wondering with all the success you are having in America how do you feel about Canadian music competing on the international music scene.
Jeremy: I think it's healthier now than it's ever been (the Canadian music scene)....
Duncan: When we did The Edge Fest tour a month ago, it was really a cool feeling to stand on a..
Jeremy: it's getting better than it's ever been.
Duncan: stage with so many other talented bands that by and large were mostly Canadian.
MTV: Our Lady Peace is: Raine Maida (Vocals), Mike Turner (Guitar), Jeremy Taggart (Drums), and Duncan Coutts (Bass/Keyboards).
Duncan: And that says a lot for how far Canadian music has come and stand on the International stage.
MTV: DaehnoleM asks: How did you get you band together?
Jeremy: Through the local paper in Toronto, we used the basic call up for a bass player, drummer... also, we were very different people and our common bond was the music.
MTVRock: KingBill V asks: Are there any bands that may have influenced your music? Who might they Be?
Duncan: It's more like who haven't.. Right now, I'm still listening to Tool, Soul Coughing, earlier on.. Beatles.. big fan. Classical music as a kid, and even early Elton John. Mike Turner used to listen to a ..lot of punk as a kid.
Jeremy: Individually it's very wide. Personally, I grew up with Jazz in the house, beatles, and Indian music. My father is a musician. (Jeremy)
Duncan: And Raine listened to and still listens to a lot of female vocalists, like Sinead O'Connor and Sheila Chandra.
MTVOnstage: JSR104 asks: Does your name "Our Lady Peace" have anything to do with Our Lady Queen of Peace?
Duncan: No
Jeremy: NO
MTVRock: Soulmandan asks: How involved was your producer Arnold Lanni in the writing process of your 2 incredible albums "Naveed" and "Clumsy"?
Duncan: Arnold's basically a 5th member of the band and when we are in the studio together.. basically everyone has an equal voice. So some parts come from Arnold, and some parts come from everybody.
Jeremy: I'm playing with glow in the dark gak - a Nickelodeon product, I highly endorse it.
MTVOnstage: LEZBO6974 asks: What does the name Our Lady Peace mean?
Duncan: It's a war poem.
Jeremy: It's from a poem by a guy named Mark Van Doren. Look it up.
Duncan: from 1942. That I can find nowhere in print.
MTVRock: HackersAB asks: Would you consider this album to be more successful than your last album? Also do you think tourning the U.S. has gotten more people aware of other canadian bands like yourself?
Jeremy: Definitely in the sense of sales. But, we are going to keep performing... and building are songwriting talents, and trying to become better musicians etc...
Duncan: We gauge if an album is successful in the sense that if we were proud to have it in our... collection once we're finished recording it. And I think we achieved that on both albums.
MTVOnstage: Happyfroo asks: I saw you guys on Real Rock TV acousticly, is there any chance you guys will ever do any acoustic shows?
Duncan: Jeremy: We mostly play acoustic on radio. But we rule
out playing out any live acoustic shows. But Duncan can't play acoustic
bass. But my Dad can play the tablas, with his feet behind his back. That's
bull. I rule at an acoustic bass.
Duncan: Ha. Don't listen to Jeremy.
Jeremy: By the way we "won't" rule out acoustic sets.
MTVRock: Castor311 asks: I know ths is kind of a strange question, but
are American audiences any more or less receptive to your live performances
than the Canadian audiences? What is your most favorite venue to perform
in? Thanks you for making such wonderful music!
Duncan: They are surprisingly similar.
Jeremy: Whenever everyone is singing every song, it doesn't
matter where they are from.
MTVRock: Raines eye asks: I just wanted to ask if you ever get tired
of playing the same songs every night cuz I can only imagine what it's
like.
Jeremy: No, it's different every night.
Duncan: No.. I still get juiced every night. Hopefully,
we wrote these songs with enough conviction in them that we won't get tired..of
playing them hopefully in ten years.
MTVOnstage: MEL523 asks: Speaking of "gak", does any of the bandmembers
have any quirky habits that you may have discovered by being on the road
together?
Duncan: Jeremy lives for the comedy bit. Whether it's
putting the most disgusting thing in my shoes, so I'll find them in the..
morning with my toes.
Jeremy: Duncan has a fetish for stealing wheel chairs
at Airports.
MTVRock: JDavis17 asks: Why isn't Chris a member of the band anymore,
and how did you come about finding Duncan? I think both are AWESOME, but
I was still wondering about the change.
Jeremy: Chris was changing musically away from what we
were doing. It just wasn't jiving creatively.
Duncan: I went to school with Raine for a couple years,
and was actually asked to join the band.. before Chris. But I was busy
going to school in a different city at that point, so I couldn't join them.
Jeremy: Just take a look at Duncan, how could he not be
in the band. He was born for us.
MTVOnstage: Jadenl asks: Why did you guys make 2 vids for Superman's
Dead?
Duncan: We made the first video for Canada, and we took
some liberties because of our success up.. there, and we didn't put much
band footage in there. So we decided to go for a different looking video
for down in the US. So we put more emphasis on the live performance.
MTVRock: RTHSNOV asks: What do you guys think about the tremendous fan
support you have built up over the past few years like the internet mailing
list Tranparent Humans which currently has over 2,000 members? Is it flattering
or overwhelming?
Jeremy: It's very flatteringly overwhelming. It's very
nice to know that there is that many people that want to know...what's
going on musically with us.
MTVOnstage: LiVECoppe asks: What was it like touring with Alanis Morrisette?
Jeremy: Great. Her band were great. And it was all around
fun. Seeing the mayhem and the manical fans. It was a one in a million
tour.
Duncan: It was very scary seeing how rabid her fans were.
MTVRock: [email protected] asks: Duncan: You joined the band after
Naveed, and I was wondering if you were in any bands before joining Our
Lady Peace?
Duncan: I was in a couple of bands in Toronto playing
the club circuit, sluggin' it out. Having fun. And listening to 'Naveed'
everyday on the radio. No, it didn't drive me crazy.
MTV: We have time for one final question tonight....
MTVRock: [email protected] asks: In all of your videos Raine Doesn't
play the guitar, but at concerts he does. Does Raine play the guitar on
the Cd Clumsy?
Jeremy: He plays on a couple tracks, "4 AM",..
Duncan: Yeah, and he does play guitar in the second Superman
video.
Jeremy: He plays the rhythm guitar on those songs.
