Chat Transcript - May 27, 2003
Welcome to the chat everyone!
<OLP> [email protected] - Why did you guys choose to go with Bob Rock again as producer on your next album?
<OLP> Because we felt with gravity that we just scratch the surface of what we could do with the relationship and we felt that there was a lot left to explore. We also really respect his talents as a producer and that we can push the envelope a little further this time because were more comfortable with him as people.
<OLP> [email protected] - Are the songs "Not Afraid, Talk Is Cheap, and Our Time Is Fading be on the new record?
ny things to devote it to someone else right nowWe are recording Not Afraid and Talk Is Cheap but we're also recording a bunch of other song so it reamains to be seem what will make the new record.
<maida_ste> Who all is chatting from OLP?
<OLP> Jeremy is in the Shower, Steve's playing guitar, you're stuck with Raine and Duncan till Jeremy gets out of the shower. It's only 10 am here.
<OLP> [email protected] - What's the hardest and easiest thing about recording tracks live off the floor?
<OLP> The hardest and best thing about recording track live off the floor is living with the inevitable mistakes that happen but those mistakes become identifiable characteristics of the song, and in my opinion make the song better. If we wanted to we could sound like a lot of other band out there right now and record everything perfectly but thats not what were interested in.
<OLP> [email protected] - Having already worked with great producers such as Lanni and Rock, do you have any intentions of ever producing an Our Lady Peace record on your own?
<OLP> No
<OLP> [email protected] - Are you at the stage of writing/recording yet where you know what songs will be on the next album? If so, what's one of the titles? :)
<OLP> We have 12 songs recorded, whether they make the next album or not remains to be seen. Youre gonna have to wait for titles.
<OLP> [email protected] - You guys have accomplished so much over the years and continue to do great things even now. My question for you is, in the futur, when you guys are no longer able to play, how do you want your fans and the rest of the world to remember you and your music?
<OLP> Theres a great big pool of music, it probably wouldnt matter if we existed or not. But hopefully people will look back and say that we added to the pool of great music and didnt detract from it.
<OLP> [email protected] - Has this album taken longer or shorter to produce than Gravity?
<OLP> Since were not officially doing a record right now, and we have 12 songs recorded in three weeks, it would be going faster than Gravity. But because were not officially recording a record, we cant compare it to Gravity.
<OLP> [email protected] - When in Maui, do you get inspired to write new material by everything that surrounds you, due to the fact that the enviroment is so new and different from Canada's?
<OLP> The vibe at Bob Rocks place is spiritual and at this point we couldnt see recording anywhere else.
<OLP> Stu> Is there any chance of seeing the unreleased songs make it out on a b-sides album any time in the foreseeable future?
<OLP> No plans for that
<OLP> [email protected] - how do you think your music has grown since the release of Naveed?
<OLP> Wait to hear the new record and then you can judge for yourself.
<OLP> [email protected] - hey guys, after such an awsome album in Gravity, what are some new things that you are thinking about for the new album?
<OLP> It's very hard for us to describe our music.
<OLP> You'll have to wait and see
<OLP> [email protected] - As a band you guys love music, but, is their other motivation that helps you to put your entire heart and soul into ever piece of music you write?
<OLP> As a band you have to be inspired by each other as people and just by living life you get inspired.
<OLP> [email protected] - When you say you're recording 'live off the floor' now, do you mean you don't do any mixing at all or is there still some mixing done?
<OLP> Every record that is recorded live off the floor or otherwise still gets mixed. Even Led Zeppelin live at Royal Albert Hall in 1970 got mixed. Its totally live but it got mixed.
<OLP> [email protected] - What kind of songs are most likely to hear on the new album? songs like theif, or songs like whatever?
<OLP> The songs you hear on the new record will be nothing like weve done in the past. Youll still be able to tell its us but it will be totally different.
<OLP> [email protected] - hey, this goes to duncan, whats with that old torn up shirt you wear anyways????any sentimental value or somthin?
<OLP> I worked long and hard to get that shirt like that. Its seen many shows but sadly has been retired.
<OLP> [email protected] - What are some advantages that you've had recording this album (so far) as opposed to the last
<OLP> Steve Mazur was in the band from the beginning. From the writing process right though and the fact that weve gone back to recording as a 4 piece
<OLP>< Angie> Being in the music business with OLP for more than ten years now, isn't there a danger to regard this too much as a job and to lose the fun of making music?
<OLP> When that happens you should quit. Fortunately we still feel inspired and now we feel like a brand new band so its not a job.
<OLP> Cyke68> Were you concerned about alienating certain fans when you spoke out against the war in iraq at recent shows?
<OLP> People should be encouraged to speak their mind on whatever subject it is. Especially when it involves important issues that effect peoples lives. Without dialogue, and constructive debate, whats the point of living in a democracy.
<OLP> Cleo> do you know roughly when the new album will be released
<OLP> no
<OLP> [email protected] - being a long time fan of olp, and the way the band has worked with a touring keyboard/stunt guitarist for the past 3 tours, i am wondering how will you make the transition back to a 4-piece unit, and how this will change the way the older songs are played?
<OLP> The older songs will be played more stripped down and the new songs dont need a fifth person.
<OLP> [email protected] - Have you ever thought about having a duet or a guest preformer during a live show or on a studio track? (since elvin jones)
<OLP> Not really, especially not now since weve been so focused on our relationship with Steve and making music with him. This album is a turning point for us.
<OLP> Maybe itll happen in the future but were not looking for it to happen.
<OLP> <blistered> Do you have any ideas for the title of the sixth album?
<OLP> No
<OLP> well some, but we're not saying anything yet.
<OLP> ihatetbay> Is there someone (a family member, close friend) who collects all the OLP 'stuff', like demos and other rarities and that sort of stuff, or is all that just kind of floating around?
<OLP> Glogson does
<OLP> [email protected] - The band has been around for about 10 years now. How do you see the industry now as to when you first started out, and how do you feel it changed you as musicans(if any)
<OLP> We dont pay attention to industry, we pay attention to ourselves. The biggest way that weve been changed is by getting Steve as a guitar player. As youll see this record is a huge turning point for us.
<OLP> [email protected] - Hello there. I just wanted to know if you are going to continue touring straight through this summer and right through releasing your next album w/o a break? And do you get anxious to play new songs youre almost done w/ when youre still touring from your last album?
<OLP> We definitely want to play the new songs. As for touring well probably end up coming back to Maui in the fall but that may change. We definitely want to play these new song because we cant believe how good they and we want to share them with everybody.
<OLP> Thanks everyone, stay tuned!
