09/12/2002 - "Quite a solid quicky!"
by Jeremy
Was this man a genius? This is a collection of interviews with the great Andy Kaufman, by the writer Julie Hecht. And boy is it smooth! I read it so fast that I wished there was a sequel. It takes you through two years of Hecht trying to get a decent interview with Kaufman. You won't believe how far Andy takes this! If Andy wasn't a genius he certainly was persistent. Just like Maynard from Tool, he took his bits to bed with him. He never gave up on the gag.
Most people did not have enough patience with Kaufman. I wish I could have seen him work. He was to comedy as John Coltrane was to Jazz music. He pushed it as far as you could, then pushed it some more, and did not stop pushing it.
I guarantee this book will get a rise out you. If you don't learn to appreciate his efforts, you'll learn to respect the commitment to his work.
Your reading rainbow pal,
Jer
